A CONVERSATION WITH LEON BOTSTEIN
Our last pre-concert talk of the season features Leon Botstein, eminent conductor, music historian, and leader in education reform, serving as the President of Bard College since 1975, home to the Bard Music Festival, Bard SummerScape, Bard College Conservatory of Music, The Orchestra Now, and numerous other prestigious programs. He is music director of the American Symphony Orchestra and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. “When it comes to ambitious, fearless orchestral programming there is Leon Botstein . . . and then there is everyone else,” wrote Steve Smith for The New York Times. Botstein is coeditor of Vienna: Jews and the City of Music, 1870-1938 (Princeton University Press), editor of The Complete Brahms: A Guide to the Musical Works of Johannes (W.W. Norton), and author of The History of Listening: How Music Creates Meaning (Basic Books), an historical inquiry into the function of music.
