This film is shared by permission. It was part of the July 16, 2023 Music Mountain Pre-Concert Presentation by Greg and Candy Dawson, The Odyssey of a Piano Prodigy from Holocaust to Music Mountain, part of our season theme, Home and Belonging.

Greg, son of former Berkshire Quartet violist David Dawson, is author of Hiding in the Spotlight and co-author of Alias Anna: A True Story of Outwitting the Nazis, which tell the story of his mother, Zhanna Arshanskaya Dawson, who escaped Nazis in her native Ukraine and made her way to America, the Juilliard School and Music Mountain where David proposed marriage.

Zhanna Arshanskaya Dawson performed often with the quartet at Music Mountain in the 1950s and ‘60s, when the Berkshire Quartet was in residence here. Candy produced this short film after the couple visited Ukraine in 2006 to trace Zhanna’s journey.
