Music Mountain was founded by Jacques Gordon, founder and first violinist of the Gordon String Quartet, in 1930 with the primary mission of education through the performance of the chamber music literature, specifically, the music for the string quartet. This mission is realized by bringing together professionals, amateurs, adults and children, by developing new audiences and by providing access to the experience of live music.
Now in its eighth decade, Music Mountain continues to bring life to this mission through a wide variety of teaching and performances by artists who come to Music Mountain from all over the world.
The mission is further enhanced through the broadcasts of the Music Mountain Chamber Music concerts, made possible by the generous support of Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, Falls Village, CT. Starting with one station in 1937, these concerts are now heard on over 125 stations nationwide and, through the facilities of the European Broadcast Union, by listeners in over 35 other countries.
Music Mountain is the home of the oldest continuing summer chamber music festival in this country. Founded in 1930 as the permanent home for the Gordon String Quartet, one of the leading string quartets of its time, Music Mountain is celebrating its 80th anniversary season in 2009.
Each season we offer a Chamber Music Series of 16 concerts, mainly on Sunday afternoons, a popular Saturday evening series of Jazz and Choral concerts, and a number of special events. As in years past, all of this concert activity offers many opportunities for visits to Music Mountain for people of all varieties of musical tastes.
Music Mountain and its marvelous setting for both the musicians and the audience is justly famed. The centerpiece is Gordon Hall - one of the finest chamber music facilities in the country. With seating for 335 and legendary acoustics, Gordon Hall provides resonant and lovely sound, views of the gardens, grounds and hills from every seat or from the lawn, permitting listeners to savor music and nature as one. The recent addition of air conditioning and heating has allowed us to extend our season into the spring and fall.
In addition to the concert hall, the Mountain has four houses, each named for an instrument in a string quartet. These are used to house musicians and students in residence at Music Mountain.
Gordon Hall and the Music Mountain residences were built by Sears Roebuck during the summer of 1930. The property and the buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Music Mountain is managed by a group of dedicated volunteers as it has been for all of its history. It may well be the only cultural institution of its importance to be so managed. This permits the money Music Mountain raises to be used to fulfill its mission of education and performance (aside from a portion going to necessary maintenance).
Funding for Music Mountain has always come primarily from the audience attending these concerts, either as ticket revenue or as contributions.
The generosity of Music Mountain’s friends, which include the artists who perform here for far below their customary fees, enables us to continue to bring you wonderful music played by distinguished and dedicated artists.
